Beginning with v3.7, NCR Silver Pro Restaurant supports EMV, a new standard of authenticating credit and debit card transactions. As part of this new method of authenticating credit and debit card payments, EMV requires a new credit card processing terminal, available from NCR. Rather than directly connecting to an iPad as an MSR does, EMV terminals connect to an iPad via Bluetooth.

Transaction processing with EMV involves changes in the way you process and manage credit card transactions. EMV provides for multiple card verification methods, such as PIN and signature. The verification method required depends on a multitude of factors, such as the methods supported by the terminal, the card, the transaction amount, and other factors.

Other key factors to keep in mind when deciding to use EMV with NCR Silver Pro Restaurant:
  • If you previously used an MSR and had configured card processor settings, you cannot use those settings or the MSR in conjunction with EMV.
  • You cannot adjust tips after closing the transaction. Once you close a transaction, EMV locks the transaction and prevents any further tip adjustment.
  • You cannot receive gift cards as a payment option.
  • You cannot manually enter a credit card.
  • Swiping the customer credit card will not assign the customer to the guest check.
  • The Saved Credit Card to a Tab feature is not available with EMV.
  • The EMV batch is not available for viewing in Silver Back Office. Viewing the EMV batch, making any adjustments, or settling the batch is done in the EMV host. Please consult with your credit card processing provider for more information.

Configuring EMV on a Device

Configuring EMV for an iPad requires you to pair the EMV terminal to the iPad via Bluetooth and to define the settings in NCR Silver Pro Restaurant.

To pair the EMV terminal to the iPad:
  1. On the iPad, tap Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Swipe the Bluetooth button to the right to enable Bluetooth on the iPad. The system searches for discoverable devices.
  3. Tap the EMV terminal you want to pair to the iPad. You may need to press the Bluetooth button on the top right of the device. When the iPad recognizes the EMV terminal, a confirmation message appears.
In some instances, such as pairing an EMV terminal to a different iPad, you will need to press the Bluetooth button until it begins flashing quickly. As soon the blue light begins flashing rapidly, release the button.

  1. Tap Pair. When the iPad completes pairing to the EMV terminal, the EMV terminal appears under MY DEVICES with Connected to the right of the name.
  2. Press the home button to exit the Bluetooth screen and return to the home screen.
To confirm the EMV terminal is paired to NCR Silver Pro Restaurant:
  1. On the home screen of the app, tap to access the slide out menu.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Under ‘PAYMENT TERMINAL,’ tap View PIN pad details. The Payment terminal screen appears and lists the connected EMV terminal with connected to the right of the terminal name. The first time you pair the EMV terminal to the app, it may take a few minutes for the EMV terminal to appear.
PRO TIP: Label the EMV terminal and the iPad it is paired with to prevent the accidental mix-up of EMV terminals and iPads.
